Holiday Madness

Today marks the end of the year, and the end of Holiday Madness! The toys, clothes, books, and games have been put away. The trash has been cleaned up. The dishes have been washed and holiday specific ones stored away for next year. The tree...yeah...it's still in the house. It's been emptied of it's lights, ornaments, and garland though. The thing is just too much for me to get outside on my own and hubs has been working so much, so for now it's just taking up space in what is now the play/learning area. I'm sad to see the holidays go, but so so happy to be done with all the stress!

Birthdays and Breakdowns

G turned 5 yesterday. After I put all the kids to bed I sat down and cried, full on tears, panic and breakdown.  L turned 2 a couple months ago, G just turned 5, P turns 10 in a few months....They're growing and needing me less and less. I'm honestly a bit afraid. I've never done anything with my life outside of being a mom, what am I supposed to do when they don't need me anymore? I know they'll always need me, but it'll be different....I guess this is just part of motherhood. I'm scared but I'm also so far beyond the excited! It's amazing watching them grow, develop personalities, become the little people that they are. These kids amaze me more and more every single day, I consider myself lucky to be witness to something so amazing.

I'm heading to bed. The kids may do amazing things, but that shit is tiresome lol. Good night dear followers.

Review: Book- Terry Treetop Saves The Dolphin

I was given the opportunity to review the e-book "Terry Treetop Saves The Dolphin" written by Tali Carmi. "Terry Treetop Saves The Dolphin" is the story of Terry Treetop, a fun loving and very curious little boy, who is on vacation with his family. He is at the beach when he sees dolphins playing in the water, and being the curious boy that he is, he of course has to try and befriend them! This wonderfully illustrated story is for ages 2-8 and is available in both e-book and paperback form.

L, my 2 year old, loved the story! He sat through the whole thing, though seemed to have some problems understanding the larger and more complex words in the story. He did enjoy all of the brightly colored pictures and had fun finding and pointing out Dido, the baby Dolphin, in each of the pictures.

G, my 4 year old, had so much fun with this story! He was able to read some parts to me and was happy to listen to me read some parts to him. He too had some issues with the bigger more complex words, but was fine once they were explained to him with terms he could better understand. He loved Terry Treetop and noticed many similarities between the character and himself.

P, my 9 year old, even read the story. Although it is pretty far below her reading level she enjoyed it and thought it was a cute story. She really liked that even though it's an e-book it still had a lot of "really gorgeous" pictures to go with the story.

As mom, I feel like "Terry Treetop Saves The Dolphin" is a great story to read to the younger kids. It teaches love, respect, and care for animals and our planet! The story is great for teaching kids about helping others, the good feeling you get when you help someone (even if it's an animal and not another person), and can be a great stepping stone to teaching your children about what is happening with our ocean animals. Although some of the more complex words were frustrating for the younger kids, they were easily explained and didn't stop them from loving the story! This was a great book for my unschooled boys, especially with their new found interest in all things ocean.

You can get the book "Terry Treetop Saves The Dolphin" by Tali Carmi on Amazon and you can find Tali Carmi on Twitter and her website The Kids' Books.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Walking Trails

Last week we went to the History Museum and walked the trails.

The kids had so much fun exploring, learning about the local area, and getting to read the signs out loud!

It was a bit chilly at the start, but we warmed up the more we walked. We found a lot of really neat places that I hadn't found before. Kids really do see more of the world than adults do, I wish I could remember to see the world like a child more often.

The beauty of the world is just something I can't get over! I spend so much time dreaming of moving away from Kansas, that I forget that it has it's own beauty that I won't be able to find anywhere else.

All in all it was a great day. Everyone had so much fun, and we all learned a lot without realizing we were doing anything other than having fun!

Review: GEN-Y Next Gen Uni Cover

I signed up for a giveaway hosted by GEN-Y for my pick of an in stock diaper cover. The dance I did in my front yard while waiting for P's bus to pick her up, after getting my YOU WON email, definitely shows how excited I was to finally be able to get my hands on one of these covers!

We've used the cover, with a cheap flat from wal-mart, for a few days now. I've washed it a few times too. I was a little concerned when I washed it the first time, such vibrant colors don't usually stay that way after washing. The cover made it through my whole wash/dry routine and came out looking exactly the same! The colors are still very vibrant, the diaper had no shrinking, and after a few washes it's still looks brand new!

This is our first diaper with side snaps. I had to look at it for a second, but I was quickly able to figure it out. I'm thinking side snapping diapers may have become my favorite! L started trying to use the potty a while ago, he won't actually "go" and doesn't seem interested in doing it, he just wants to sit there like the big kids. The GEN-Y Next Gen Uni cover is super simple for him to get on and off, without need of help, which makes things go so much smoother around here!

GEN-Y Next Gen Uni cover is a cloth diaper I'm more than happy to tell everyone about! The one and only thing I can think that would make them better would be for me to have money so I can buy more! Yep, look at that, I can't even come up with something for the diaper itself! I can't find anything about the Gen-Y Next Gen Uni cover that I don't like.

Have you used GEN-Y Next Gen Uni covers? Or any other GEN-Y products? If so what do you think about them?

Learning & Living

The boys have been really big on "sea life" lately. They keep wanting to know more and more about everything that has to do with the ocean. G is getting more adamant about being a fishermen, though he's no longer sure he wants to be a "lobster fishermen." L loves the whales and dolphins, he keeps "talking like a whale" Oooooohhhh aaaawwww oooohhhh aaaawww! It's cute, the first 10 minutes....now it's starting to get annoying, but he's having fun so I'll just keep dealing with it.

We've been feeling a bit of cabin fever lately. It's been cold, fall seems to have decided to just run away and not look back. They're calling for snow on Tuesday, snow before Thanksgiving. Don't get me wrong, I love snow, it's beautiful, but seriously? Before Thanksgiving? Come on now Kansas! What ever happened to fall?! I want colorful leaves on the trees, the crunch of leaves under my feet, crisp air, beautiful fall smells! Is that really so much to ask for?

When Did That Happen?!

Today G was playing xbox, some wizard game that I don't even know what it's called. I'd set it up on the tutorial, figuring it'd talk to him. Nope...it was pretty much all words on the screen! Last I knew, G couldn't read outside of recognizing his own name. I watched, waiting for him to get frustrated and ask for help. He kept doing what the tutorial was saying to do, and I figured it was a fluke. Suddenly, he came running over to ask if this button is the start button, I let him know that it was, and then he went back to the T.V. At that point my little man, at only 4 years old, never having been "taught" to read anything, started reading the instructions out loud! I was stunned! Yet another sign that unschooling is working! I have no idea when he started being able to read, but the fact that he can is awesome! Every day I lose a little more of my fear that I'm not doing the right thing, every day G shows me that I'm doing exactly the right thing for him! I wonder how long it'll be before L starts reading?

Daylight Savings Time

Why?!? Why must we have daylight savings time? My children don't understand the concept of time moving back an hour, they still wake up crazy early! We've been up since 5, which would have been 6 yesterday (yeah, try explaining that to a 2 year old!) so it's not too bad but I want sleep! Today will be brought to you by loads of coffee, hopefully enough to keep me awake but not make me feel like some crazed crack head.

We learned about how and why time was brought about yesterday while watching the weather channel. Maybe we can roll it over to today and learn about why we still have daylight savings time, and figure out who does and doesn't use it!

Halloween 2014!

The kids had a great Halloween! They made out like little candy bandits. Bad mom moment? I'm letting them eat some of it for breakfast! This is so going to bite me in the butt later, but for now they're having fun and that's what matters. It was pretty cold last night, so by the time we were done everyone was tired and cold, which led to a lot of whining...after we got home and everyone got warmed up (and they got to eat some candy before bed) everyone was in much better spirits! Here's to hoping that next year is just as good, if not better!

How was your Halloween?

Pumpkin Painting

Pumpkin Painting 2014!

School?

As I've said before P is in public school, her choice and I support her, as she's thriving and doing amazing! The boys are learning at home, G is technically old enough for preschool and L has a few years to go before we even need to think about school of any kind. Hubs is letting me do the at home thing, without much complaint, but he doesn't really seem on board...or at least he didn't seem on board until recently. G still doesn't read or write or spell, but he can do math years beyond what his peers can do! L is even figuring out basic addition! I haven't actually taught them anything though, they've learned just from watching others and asking questions. It seems like it's going really well, unschooling seems like the way to go for them, but...like with every other thing I do as a mom I second guess myself all the time. This morning though...this morning I realized that I need to let go of my fears, my boys are learning and they're doing it happily! So, I'm going to let it go and just see what happens. If anything, legally you don't have to start school until you're 7 years old so if it does become needed the option will still be there later.
This was this morning. The boys decided they wanted to play a math game. I'm pretty sure they didn't even realize that they were learning, but play is the best form of learning!

Air Museum Trip

P is the only kid in our house who goes to public school, it's her choice and although I'd prefer she stay home, she loves public school and is thriving there. She had a day off not long ago so she got to join us for a homeschool/unschool adventure! The boys love air planes, guns, military, and learning about wars. Hubs happened to get a great idea and asked if they wanted to see the big military planes parked on the grounds of our local air base (parts are public, so even us nonmilitary peoples can go) and of course they said yes! While we were there we realised that the national guard air museum was not only open, but free! Double win! The kids enjoyed it so much, and getting to see/touch stuff was really cool! It was a great time, filled with lots of learning that was just too fun to feel like learning.

Good Morning Present

I wanted so much to post about this as soon as it happened yesterday, but with everyone home for a change computer time was limited! L got up crazy early, like he always does. I heard him hollering for me and went to get him (there's a baby gate in his doorway...he's a runner if given the chance lol) and what do I find? Naked butt! Ok, that's whatever...I can deal with first thing in the a.m. nakedness. He hands me his diaper, I say thanks and put my other hand out to help him over the gate. It was at that point...that...that he handed me shit, real shit. I about threw up! I can handle a nasty blow out of a diaper with no problems, I can catch puke in my hands, but to just be handed a handful of shit?! Nope, can't do it! After lots of washing of our hands, and more washing of our hands, we were ready to start the day! Thankfully this morning I was greeted with kiss, that's a much better morning present!

Little Gamers

I've got little gamers in my home. All 3 kids love video games, preferably xbox 360 games. Their newest obsession, you ask? Minecraft! We don't even have the full game, just the trail. The amount of time and effort that they've put into the trial amazes me, especially since they all know that after 20 minutes the trail kicks them off and they have to start all over from scratch. I guess I know what we're getting the kids next!

My Future?

The boys destroyed their room this morning. I finally managed to convince them that they want to clean up the mess...don't ask how, because I'm still not sure (and yes, I'll probably be kicking myself in the ass for not writing down how I managed to pull this off come tomorrow.) L had his teddy and was heading back towards his room, all of a sudden he turned around and came jogging over to me. He handed me Teddy and told me to watch him, he'd be back soon. He sat Teddy in my lap, gave him a kiss and then walked away. No thank you, no kiss for mommy, just "hey, watch my "kid" and walking away! Is this going to be my future? Damn...I so hope not lol.

Dump & Sweep

I'm really not sure why my 2 year old does it, but he's constantly dumping things out on the floor just so he can get the broom and sweep them up! Crayons, change, blocks, small cars...pretty much anything that can be dumped, will be dumped! Seriously? The floor hasn't been swept today, I'm only 1 cup of coffee into the day (be happy I started diaper laundry already LOL!) so if you really feel like you need to sweep stuff up, just sweep the dirt off the floor and we'll be good! You get to sweep like you want, and I'll get to sit on my ass and still have a clean floor! Sound good? No?! Ugh...fine! You just keep having fun, I'll go do the mommy stuff.

This post brought to you by a sleep deprived mommy who has an overwhelmingly large amount of housework to do, with kids who don't like to clean real messes, only the ones they make for the purpose of using the broom LOL!

Mommy Blog?!

I finally decided to jump on the mommy blogger bandwagon! Woo! "Introdoction?" you say? Alright, I can do that.

I'm Kirstie, I'm the Queen Mom of this house.

Hubs works, a lot, but is a great dad!

P is our only girl, she's 9yo. She loves books, arts and crafts, music, pinterest, playing on electronics, and hanging with her friends.

G is the oldest boy (a touch of middle child syndrome here lol), he's 4yo. He likes rough and tumble, monster trucks, Legos, superheros, and video games.

L is the youngest, he's 2yo. He likes books, playing outside, TMNT, superheros, video games, tablets, coloring on the floor, and in general making a mess!

We have 2 cats and a flock of chickens. Currently the chickens are on a friends farm until we can get the new coop built.

Well, that's us. Here you'll get the good, the bad, and the ugly. Hopefully I'll even be able to add reviews and giveaways as time goes on!
